A Fourth of July Escape to San Diego

I don’t usually travel to a place twice but San Diego hits different.

The second I land, the ocean air hits and suddenly life feels lighter. I have no worries! The salty ocean breeze, endless sunshine, and the kind of energy that makes you want to stay outside all day. Isn’t that just the best!?

I was there for about a week, so let me share some of my favorite food spots. By the way this is a great place if you ever want to try solo traveling. I was alone for half the week and it was heavenly.

On one morning stroll, I landed at Chiefy Café (@chiefycafe), where I dug into a chia pudding bowl so refreshing it felt like breakfast and vacation in one. I balanced it out (of course) with an apple cinnamon muffin—warm, soft, and just sweet enough. That combo fueled me for hours of exploring.

Chiefy Cafe is at the gaslamp quarter, where I was staying. I have to say, I wish we had one here in Phoenix. The owner loves dogs, so if you have a dog, take them here!

Day One I took myself to Seaport Village. Ah I love that place! This village is basically a shopping center by the ocean. There are over 70 shops, galleries. After a long day, grab yourself some food and sit by the water during sunset. Chefs kiss.

Dinner time meant tacos—because honestly, what’s San Diego without tacos? At La Puerta (@lapuertasd), I couldn’t resist their mix n match tacos. So good! And I wasn’t the only one who thought so. When I got there it was so packed I had to sit at the bar on the last open seat. A bit uncomfortable but worth it.

My two friends, Stephanie and Julie joined me later in the week for my birthday. I was so excited since I had already came before, I showed them some spots. Felt like a local hahah. I’m grateful to share this travel experience with them.

One afternoon led me and my friends to the water, where we ended up at Guava Beach (@guavabeach) with a plate of grilled mahi mahi tacos. Picture this: wind in your hair, waves rolling in the background, and the smoky, citrusy flavor of fresh fish wrapped in a tortilla. That’s San Diego happiness, right there.

But one of my favorite discoveries was Rosemarie’s Burgers (@rosemariesburgers). Nothing fancy—just classic sliders with fries done perfectly. Sometimes travel food doesn’t need to be complicated; it just needs to taste like home after a long day of adventure. If you check it out, I would also try some of their brews. Yummy!

And then came the Fourth of July night. We had no clue where to go see the best fireworks show. We picked Waterfront Park by the ships. Let me tell you, the best spot in town! The fireworks are all around Coronado island so anywhere by the water is a good move.

As the sun dropped, the city lit up—fireworks exploding behind the Maritime Museum ship. We were all full of “ooohs” and “ahhhs” Which made strangers feel like friends. I was scared a bit before because in such big crowds like that unfortunately things can happen. With everything going on recently, that was in the back of my mind for sure. But it was all ok, and a really good time.

If you ever get the chance to go to San Diego—go. Eat boldly, wander slowly, and let San Diego show you her hidden gems. And if you can time it with the Fourth? Even better. 🎆

** I have so many more stories, and recommendations for San Diego that I will post later one. Stay tuned!
